Circle chart recorders are an area of paper recorders which is still developing in many markets. Having the entire record of a period from 1 hour to 31 days visible at a glance makes this format desirable in many applications. The instruments can be simple, recording one variable such as temperature, to complex instruments including control functions and data communications facilities.
The core of these instruments, regardless of sophistication, lies in a chart printed accurately on the correct grade of paper and matched with a reliable pen. Graphic Controls works closely with specialist paper mills to specify papers with the correct physical and chemical properties. These are matched to pens manufactured by us with inks to unique formulations devised to give optimum performance over a wide range of operating conditions. Our products are successful from the Artic Circle to the Equator and all climates in between!
The very latest in flexo graphic reel-fed machines have been produced to our unique specification to guarantee accurate and clean charts are produced economically to meet the needs of all our customers from major OEMs to users with just one recorder.
Circle charts are produced on a variety of papers including ink writing, thermal and pressure sensitive (wax). Almost any diameter and shape and combination of centre drive hole(s) can be accommodated. |

Traditionally strip charts have been produced in roll form. This format makes looking back into the record difficult as the roll has to be unwound. Most modern recorders use fan folded charts, or at least offer this as an option. These are easy to read as individual pages can be quickly accessed, and in most cases are page numbered.
This format can provide the chart manufacturer with headaches however. The cross perforations must be 100% uniform across the web and at exactly ninety degrees to it to avoid producing “packs” that lean and may jam in the recorder. Graphic Controls have developed a unique new technology since 2003 which overcomes these problems and removes the arduous task of setting knives, which on traditional machines can take as long as the production run itself!

The oldest form of recording chart rolls are still in widespread use throughout the world. As with all charts the accuracy of the final record relies upon the accuracy of the print and its precise registration to the paper and the drive holes. After being printed onto large rolls the individual chart has to be rewound onto the small spool for use in a recorder. It is at this stage that an end-warning line will be printed, usually in red, to warn of the approaching end of the roll. All Graphic Controls charts are labeled to indicate the re-order code, batch number and date of production for quality assurance record purposes.

Many recorders use a sheet of printed chart paper which is wrapped around a rotating drum. Typically these are barographs but variations include thermographs (temperature), hygrographs (relative humidity) and instruments combining two or all three of these.
With many of these recorders rotating very slowly, a week is common, the paper must be of the highest quality to avoid ink from the pen soaking into the chart, creating an unsightly “blob” and obscuring the data. By using pens and charts from Graphic Controls such problems are eliminated. |
